Is the Mitchell Daily Republic saying Volesky can't win?
From today’s Mitchell Daily Republic Editorial:
But even worse, without pointing out the faults of a GOP candidate's strategy against Herseth, the Mitchell paper is already considering Stephanie Herseth unbeatable. Without even seeing a slate of candidates to choose from?
So, is the Mitchell Daily Republic saying no challenger candidates stand a chance this year? Possibly. But I'll bet they'll force themselves to violate the standard set forth through that editorial opinion and take their advertising dollars.
I'm probably a little pollyanish among my friends in the world of politics. But I've always held the opinion that in politics anybody can beat anybody, given the right set of circumstances. Never count anyone out.
A sluggish candidate catches fire after eloquent statements. An opponent is arrested for drunken driving. Two leading candidates rip each other apart, and an unscathed candidate who had been trailing rises above the fray. (Does that one sound familiar?)
The right set of circumstances required might be as improbable as the leading candidate being arrested as a cross-dressing pedophile. The key in any case is that underdog having a sound enough and legitimate enough campaign to appear as a viable alternative.
In most cases when a trailing candidate overtakes an impossible to beat incumbent - they've made their own luck. They've made their own set of circumstances. They've done what needed to be done to make the odds swing their way.
So before you count out a candidate, see what they say and the kind of campaign they have to run. They may just make their own luck.
"To hang your candidacy on a new tax is highly questionable, but Volesky rarely has employed traditional strategies - and consequently has had trouble attracting a statewide following. To paraphrase Sam Kinison, ….and you thought I was tough on Democrats. Yeesh. It's pretty bad when one of the state's major daily papers tells you to forget it two days before you announce.
"His candidacy against incumbent Gov. Mike Rounds represents the same challenge for Democrats as Republicans face with Rep. Stephanie Herseth. Rounds is highly popular, and with all due respect to Volesky, the Democrats have yet to identify a candidate who could win next year’s gubernatorial race. Similarly, Republicans have yet to come up with a name who could unseat the popular Herseth."
But even worse, without pointing out the faults of a GOP candidate's strategy against Herseth, the Mitchell paper is already considering Stephanie Herseth unbeatable. Without even seeing a slate of candidates to choose from?

But as Volesky goes, how many times does he need to lose before he realizes that even the Democrats aren't impressed any more?
