The Sutton committee has been formed

KCCR News had the story early this AM (at least, earlier than the Argus) that the committee formed to hear the Sutton matter has now been formed:
The select committee will be chaired by Senate Republican Majority Leader Dave Knudson. Other Republicans on the committee are Gray, Gene Abdallah, Ed Olson and Kenneth McNenny. Democrats on the committee are Minority Leader Scott Heidepriem, Nancy Turbak, Ben Nesselhuff and Gary Hanson. Gray says a Democrat will be appointed to serve as vice chair. Gray says if there is a disciplinary hearing, it would start probably in the second week of the session. He says details such as when, when and how many times the committee would meet haven’t been set. Gray says the select committee would serve as any other legislative committee. It could recommend some type of action against Sutton, such as expulsion, censure or nothing at all, that would then have to be approved by the entire Senate.

Who's on the House select committee on Roger Hunt?

So is this committee open to the public? Is this where the lawyers for the two sides will present their cases? Will the people of the state get to see the proceedings? No, I am not a voyeur (sp?). But I would hate to see this just swept under the rug. Especially after Sutton's in-your-face resignation from last session but not this one.

PP -

I know you covered the process of the possible Special Session (from the information you knew) - can you discribe the process of how this investigation will play out in the next couple of weeks? i.e. - how much will it differ from a trial? similarities? Other things that would help us understand the process.

Obviously a jury of his peers. Do they bring the rope to the inquisition or have the decency to haul it out later?

I'm sure it's going to be a absolute circus...learn as they go type thing...what a joke!! Kudos to Sutton for facing this thing head on and clearing his name!! I for one can't wait to watch this saga unfold and see Dan finally vindicated!! You go Dan!!

It's not a jury per se, it's more of a legislative hearing where they'll hear evidence and come up with a recommendation.

Instead of pass or do not pass, I suspect it will be Censure, Expulsion, or No Action, with a recommendation made to the body as a whole.

From there, I suspect they'll deliberate and it will be an up or down vote.

We watched Rounds choke like a yellow-striped coward when it came to allowing the execution of the vicious murderer Page. Let's see if these politicians in the Senate choke or live up to their own hype.

My bet is they choke. Or Sutton resigns and they slither away untested. This is when we need Scheenbeck more than ever!

I have a sad feeling this is already decided, and nothing will happen. So much for ethics in the legislature. I gave Sutton the benefit of the doubt until he resigned and didn't resign.

Oh...whatever people. Have you honestly ever seen such a circus in all of your life? Dan was investigated for the better part of a year and no charges...He was already convicted without being heard and outsmarted the vultures out to get him by his resignation, and now you cry and whine about that. It was a smooth move that allowed his team of lawyers to have more time, because originally he was alloted a whole 6 days to decide what to do...and he DIDN'T resign. He was prepared to go forth with the special session and just because his lawyers are smarter than the state's lawyer doesn't make him guilty BY ANY MEANS!! It makes them savvy, not slithery...so take that and smoke it in your pipe!!! GO DAN!!!!

I agree with Anon 8:16, because for those of you that read this and think that Sutton's lawyers can't be better, because Janklow is on the other side, Janklow is not the lawyer for the state, because his only job is to protect the rights of the Wiese boy, not to prosecute Dan.

Go Dan!! Now go and get yourself vindicated!!

Alleuia....AMEN!! DAN SUTTON RULES!!!

I agree with 8:16, 8:27, and 8:35.
Dan is a good guy who has built an exceptional reputation throughout his 30+ years of life. He has done a great deal for the people of his legislative district, the town of Flandreau, the youth, his friends, and his family.

Seriously, Dan Sutton is a role model to many and should be. It is so unfortunate that false accusations, can ruin a guys life and reputation in the eyes of so many. Sometimes people like an unfounded and untrue national enquirer story more than the truth.

And now, Sutton has to subject himself to a "Committee Investigation" by his Senate Peers where no one really knows what the heck they are doing. Even though, knowing the accusations, he was re-voted into the legislature by the people of his district.

No matter what happens, I doubt things will be fair for Sutton, but I am so proud of that man for fighting this. He is a true Irish at heart and will FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!!! Thats why they call us the FIGHTING IRISH :)

My prayers and support are with you Dan! May God grant you the strength you will need to endure this journey.

PP...I think you should thank Dan Sutton...it is not a coincidence that your numbers shot up when this whole deal broke. I think you have all of Moody County reading your blog and you should go a little easy with your bias against Dan because a large portion of your reader base is in support of this outstanding young man. You need not be so quick to judge and say things like he WILL lose his seat etc....I just hope that Pierre is ready for Mike Butler and Patrick Duffy because I know Mike Butler and Patrick Duffy are ready for Pierre!!!! Vindicate DAN!!!

To the Thousands of Sutton Supporters-

I seriously think we should open an account at Farmers State Bank titled the "I Support Sutton Fund" where we could donate cash to help the poor man, his wife, and their adorable little lucy pay for these ridiculous lawyer bills that are resulting from a false accusation.

Is there anyone else who is serious that they would donate? If so, I think we need to open an account.

VINDICATE SUTTON!

Go for it, Dan loves support, because he does not yet realize how many people support him, because if the election wasn't proof, this will be. It is the South Dakotan and god fearing thing to do, to help those that are in trouble, especially the innocent. Janklow got help in his case and he killed a man, Sutton was accused of groping a young man, whose accusations may of had a political motive. This man and his family are going through a living hell to put all the pieces together, but Dan and if need be, his mother, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, and their progeny are willing to go through hell to clear his name. Support the good Senator, do the right thing.

Go Dan!!!

I looked at Dan's website and his mailing address is listed as follows:

Dan Sutton
PO Box 282
Flandreau, SD 57028

Maybe we should just mail our checks directly to him and note that they are to assist in his vindication.

What does everyone think?

I think that we should give this charity a name, how about Make Sutton's Wish foundation or Free Sutton for a Fee any other names would be cool as well.

Free Sutton form the courts of public opinion!!!!!

Why didn't he just go ahead and face the music last fall? Get it over and done with. I've never heard a statement from him that he didn't do anythng wrong. He should have been protesting his innocence from the rooftops, not just sitting quietly by and hoping by the time the matter got addressed no one would care any enough to follow thru on it.

I still say that resigning and then not resigning smacks of arrogance. And slithery lawyers, probably smart too, but definitely slithery.

BECAUSE you moron...why not use time on your side to be well prepared...especially when you are walking into a bunch of vultures like he is walking into and all he saw or read was quotes such as Olson saying "this is a learn as we go type deal" good God if your life and reputation were at stake wouldn't you want to be prepared...even when a person is innocent, people decide they're already guilty. It is pretty easy for you to hide behind your computer and say "face the music" blah blah blah when it isn't your life at stake...just think a little bit before you judge someone elses actions!!!

Vindicate Dan!!!

Anon 4:49...

Sorry. I've got to kill that one. At the very least, it needs to be "Allegedly" play with someones....

What about naming the fund the "Support Sutton" fund?

or the "I Support Sutton Fund...and that's not an allegation!"

A Poem for Sutton Supporters:

Sutton for Senate, his seat was won fair and square. Even after the residents of District 8 had heard of this affair. They knew it wasnt true, so they showed up at the polls and voted blue. Now he needs your continued support. Send good wishes, cash, or prayers his way because soon their will be a vindication day!

alright people, if you are such great supporters of dan, and if you are so readily prepared to start a public fund - why not become public yourselves? all i see is anonymous, anonymous, anonymous. if you think you're on the right side, why don't you reveal your identities and become as public as your so-called fund.
