Congrats.
A nice little bit of recognition for Jim Soyer, Senior Staff Member in charge of Special Projects for Governor Rounds. This release from NSU says it all. Congratulations Jim.
Soyer Named Distinguished NSU Alumni
(ABERDEEN, SD) Northern State University is proud to recognize Jim Soyer as this year distinguished alumni. The 1970 graduate of Northern State College continues to play critical roles on leadership teams in political campaigns and state government.
After graduation in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in English education, Soyer began his career as a teacher in Pierre and Watertown. In 1972, his political and government service began when he helped his college roommate, David Volk, become the youngest statewide elected official in the nation.
Throughout the last thirty-three years in the private and public sector, he has been a campaign manager, Congressional field representative, editor, writer, advertising manager, press secretary, chief of staff, projects coordinator and legislative director for a variety of businesses and state leaders.
Soyer, who has worked with the administration for various Governors, has helped with Citibank's move to South Dakota, saving the core railroad line, decreasing property taxes, wiring and integrating technology into schools, and starting the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children unit and Amber Alert system.
During his career, Soyer believes his role is to gather, organize, analyze and boil down accurate, relevant information to its essentials so that his superiors can make the most well-informed and best decisions possible.
He has served a variety of state leaders including David Volk, Larry Pressler, South Dakota Governors Bill Janklow (during both terms), George Mickelson, Mike Rounds and Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson. Soyer currently serves as Director of Legislative Affairs and Special Projects for Governor Rounds.
Soyer and his wife Lonnie reside in Pierre. Their daughter, Nicole Namken, is working in Vilseck, Germany, as a deployment specialist, helping families move to and from the Army base there. Her husband, Cole, is a U.S. Army Ranger scout platoon leader with the First Infantry. He returned from Iraq this Spring and they anticipate coming back to the United States in the Fall, 2005.
Soyer will be officially recognized during Gypsy Day festivities in Aberdeen, S.D. on September 30 and October 1st. For a complete schedule of Gypsy Days activities, log on to http://www.northem.edu/
