Nothing to do with politics, but "Crikey", how do you explain that one to the kids?

I mention it because it's a needed diversion from politics this weekend, and I used to watch this all the time with my kids. Today it is being reported that Steve Irwin, the "Crocodile Hunter" was killed today while filming.

No, it wasn't a crocodile that got him, but a stingray which stabbed him in the heart while ironically, filming a special called the ocean's deadliest. From Yahoo/AP news:
Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous barb on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.

"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.

Crew members aboard the boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said.

Stingray? He's just lucky he never came to SD because one of those mountain lion's would surely have gotten him!!!! Let's kill them w/the Stingray's and the Dem's.

Now there's a weak attempt at politicizing this story. Here's a stronger effort:

Medicial officials believe that Irwin died instantly and painlessly. Perhaps someone should send one of those stingrays to the South Dakota State Penetentiary!

Its too bad he died. I'm not much of a conservationist, but you have to admire someone who was so dedicated to his beliefs and wanted to educate everyone.

He did a special from SD - he & his family toured the Badlands and the Black Hills. He & his daughter climbed Mt. Rushmore and had lots of buffalo scenery. It was on the Travel Channel. He did a great job for SD tourism. I guess he assumed the risk - too bad for his family.
