Is is Democracy in Action or Democrats in Action

Did anyone read the Mt. Blogmore post about Democracy in Action? Apparently there was some fuss over the group being referred to as a bunch of Democrats:

The local group Democracy in Action, which bills itself as “Women working for a better world,” now has it’s own blog, “DIA-Log.” DIA is liberal and Democratic, with a capital “D.” The DIA Website is ambitious. It includes a voter’s guide, questions candidates should answer, a “how to” if you want to get involved.

Alert Blogmorites will recognize some Blogmore regulars on the site.

BTW, the DIA Evening Group meets tonight, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Rapid City Public Library.

*See the comment from Deb. She objects to me calling DIA a Democratic group with a capital “D.” She says the group is “Progressive.” I perused the endorsement list and didn’t find a single Republican. Or even an independent. But it’s entirely possible that I missed one. Deb points out that the group has Republican and Independent members. Point taken.

And Deb raises an interesting question: What’s the difference between a Democrat and a “Progressive” (with a capital “P”)?

Read it here. And if someone coule tell me of the Republicans in the group, please let me know. If one looks at it's group of endorsees, it seems pretty Democratic oriented:

The one Republican in the group they endorsed is the unopposed one. Imagine that.

Otherwise, The website does also boast a blog, but you won't see it here. Why? One of the things you will note that they don't have is an RSS feed. No RSS Feed, no left links.

To be fair, maybe they chose not to endorse in some races, such as the Congressional because they thought Herseth wasn't "Progressive" enough.

The difference is like saying all Republicans are "Conservative." I can't imagine a ton of Conservative groups would have endorsed Sen. Adelstein, right?

Why don't they just call themselves "liberal"? Are they afraid of to?
Anonymous said…
Sure they are! Liberal has a negative connotation to it nowadays to many people, whereas "progressive" is much more palatable. However, it's the same person, just in a different dress!

We have also endorsed Ed McLaughlin, but didn't get his name bolded like it should have been.

We have topic up now about language, including the words "progressive" and Liberal". Also look for variations on "conservative."

I have a friend who finished high school last year and went to Harvard this year.

She campaigned for Herseth and Daschle.

She registered Republican--when I asked her why she said something about an effect on the primary elections.

So Melanie--how many of the endorsed candidates do you actually intend to vote for? Maybe you registered with the wrong party.

I would like to hear from DIA itself why there is no endorsement in the congressional race. Specifics, please. Be honest.

I am a Republican supporting the DIA group! I believe that more women should enter politics, especially if there is going to be increasing desicions made on women's issues by men - even well-intentioned ones. If women make up 51% of the population, there should be a likewise ratio of women holding offices.
