Dang. I've been "Cabled."

"Cabled"

Definition: (verb) A new term for an instance when a South Dakota boy goes for a walk by himself at night in a major urban center and makes a turn on to a dark side street, and gets assaulted and robbed by several assailants.

Example. "Ole left the hotel he was staying at in Manhattan. He got bored, and decided to go for a midnight walk, but got cabled after he turned down that dark alley. Lena had to wire home for more money after that."
See here at the Argus Leader for details.

Yes, Thank god he's ok. But who walks on dark side streets by themselves in cities?

The thing that "some" people don't know is no matter where you are 3 streets can be great and just like Ole Shawn turn the wrong corner and they got ya.
Where is the common sense. oops,
Face it no matter what city, what state, what area small or big has areas you just shouldn't go!
Bfad for Shawn hope him well and i am hoping he learned.

This smells a little funny to me. I think we've all heard stories of guys from smaller towns (where they're well known) going to the city looking for something they shouldn't be looking for and finding themselves in trouble. He leaves his wife in her hotel room bed, finds himself in a shady part of town in a big city and gets roughed up? I wonder what he asked those guys? I wonder what he was looking for?

yeah, nobody 'accidentally' turns down a dark street by mistake. that's the biggest load of horse-s*** I've ever heard. smelled rotten from the start. and his mother is the one fielding the reporter's calls?

$100....what could possibly cost $100?

Seems to me he could have seen those bad guys around the corner if he'd have taken a quick look at Viper before he went there !!!!

there's that scene in Brokeback Mountain where Jake Gyllenhal's character walks down that dark alley...

If you haven't spent time in a big city or larger city then some of these comments are not valid. It soes not aways have to be dark for you to get yourself in trouble. Heck an airport can kind you beat an robbed. In a hospital stair well can get you the same. Even when docotors and nurses are up and down them all the time. THere are just crazy people out there who don't care about nobody but themselves.
BUT, Shawn should have know better at that time of the night to wonder off. I also don't think it was for the "ladies of the night". That was a low call.

What's the problem?

Senator McCain said it's safe to walk the streets of Baghdad so surely you can walk the streets in America!

Hello people, you know even good ole South Dakota has places that are not safe either. Small town or big city, any state, any time.
Also some people just don't think about their surroundings all the time. I bet he remembers now.

Apparently Shawn hadn't seen that night's local forcast: Turning mostly dark with a slight chance of mugging.

Yeah, yeah! It was ... uh ... 3 guys - yeah, 3 guys. Real big guys.

And ... uh ... and they had a gun. Yeah, it was 3 big guys with a gun.

And ... uh ... it was dark and ... I didn't get a good look at them.
