Governor Rounds is Steering the Huckabee Presidential Campaign

The Argus had already mentioned it, but an official announcement is out from the Huckabee Campaign naming South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds as the Chairman of the Steering Committee for the Huckabee for President Campaign:
Campaigning in Iowa today, Mike Huckabee announced that Governor Mike Rounds (R-SD) will serve as Chairman of the National Steering Committee of his presidential exploratory campaign.

"I'm truly proud to have the strong support and backing of Mike Rounds -- a distinguished governor and true leader -- who also shares my governing philosophy and political ideas," said Huckabee, who served as Arkansas governor from 1996-2007, during a media availability in Sioux City.

Huckabee said Rounds, whose state shares a border with Iowa, will work with 2006 lieutenant governor nominee Bob Vander Plaats of Sioux City and former Iowa House Speaker Pro Tem Danny Carroll of Grinnell to help deliver Iowa and the early primary states. Huckabee previously named Vander Plaats and Carroll to serve as the Iowa chairman and co-chairman, respectively, of his presidential exploratory committee.

"I believe we need a strong leader to move America forward -- a leader with a proven record of achievement and a clear and optimistic vision for our future. That leader is Mike Huckabee," wrote Rounds in a letter being sent to the nation's Republican Governors. Lauding the strength of Huckabee's message and plan to restore America's greatness, Rounds cited Huckabee's ability to get things done during his tenure as chairman of the 50-state National Governors' Association as one reason why the GOP Governors should back the former Arkansas governor.

Good to know. I thought Rounds had retired. He's been AWOL this year. Is he still Governor? Or is Mitch Media Hack Krebs doing the job? He's getting paid enough to do both jobs.

Great, another born again freak to lead the GOP.

This is bad news for Huckabee. Since Rounds has done nothing since being elected governor, Huckabee shouldn't expect very much as Rounds' history proves that he is incapable of effectiveness, leadership, new ideas, etc. etc. etc.

If I were Huckabee, I'd be happy to have as a chairman a hugely popular governor who was just handily reelected and is from a state bordering Iowa.

Rounds won't deliver South Dakota for Huckabee, but it won't matter because Huckabee will be out by then anyway.

Huckabee's not as charismatic, intelligent, or effective as the last governor of Arkansas who ran for President. Nor does he match up well against that former Arkansas first lady.

Huckabee is dropping out soon to run for Senate anyways.

Having Rounds endose Huckabee is the kiss of death for his campaign. M&M Do-Nothing Rounds is not a "hugely popular" governor. He was just considered the lesser of evils in every statewide race he ran. He was not elected for his outstanding qualitites, but because he just smiled and kept his mouth shut so no one knew where he stood on the issues. Not that he had a stand on any isssue.

Last I saw, Rounds approval rating is something lik 74% (as I recall). I would call that "hugely popular."

Does this mean that Rounds isn't seriously thinking about running for Senate in 2008? Given that he'll be governing the state, and playing a significant role with a major Presidential campaign, it doesn't seem like he'll have a lot of time left over to build a campaign against Johnson.

PP, you used to work for him, what do you think this says about his interest in a 2008 Senate race?

I didn't know Huckabee was for higher taxes, more regulation, nepotism and any potential big government expenditure. I am happy he's made it easy for me by picking someone who shares his philosphy and values to chair his presidential campaign.

I guess I'll just keep waiting for someone of substance who truly shares my values of less government, lower taxes, less spending, rejection of wasteful government public works programs, anti-corruption/nepotism and has a spine on the death penalty. Boy, I didn't think that would be that hard to find in the GOP--welcome to South Dakota.

You should look into Fred Thompson--he pretty much sums up what youare looking for.

Rounds might actually be good at this. Being that Arkansans can't vote for Rounds for anything, he's got nothing to lose by coming up with ideas. Here in SD, he can't muster the courage to do a damn thing because he's afraid of losing votes. No such problem in Arkansas.

Humpbuggee for President! Rounds for ambasador to Lichtenstein! If we can get rid of Rounds maybe it's worth it!

The primary will be over in ten to eleven months so if they haven't raised a ton of money by July, I wouldn't expect them to be competitive. Huckabee? I am a bit surprised that the Governor is supporting him.

Sen. Thune may also have jumped on the bandwagon too soon. McCain has plunged to the teens in support and I do not think it is likely that he will bounce back. He is a good guy but those that I talk to think his time has passed.

That leaves Romney and Giuliani. Given his strength in the polls, I would place my bet on Giuliani. He would be very strong in the general election too.
