Graduates to Receive Alumni Achievement Awards During Dakota Days at The U

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Six extraordinary alumni of The University of South Dakota will be presented with Alumni Achievement Awards at Dakota Days 2005. They will be recognized at the All-Alumni Dinner on Friday, Oct. 7 in Vermillion.

Alumni are honored in the following categories:
  • Outstanding service in a profession or career
  • Outstanding service to The University
  • Outstanding contributions to his or her community
The 2005 Alumni Achievement Award recipients are: U.S. Rep. Kevin P. Brady ’90 B.S.F.A., The Woodlands, Texas; Richard A. Cutler ’63 B.A., ’65 J.D., ’97 H.L.D., Sioux Falls, S.D.; Grace Steinberg Day ’48 B.A., ’49 LL.B., St. Joseph, Mo.; Hollis R. Hurlbert ’69 B.S.B.A., posthumously, Aberdeen, S.D.; Paul Schiller ’70 B.A., Sioux Falls, S.D., and William Stier, Jr. ’72 Ed.D., Brockport, N.Y.

U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady is serving his fifth term in congress, representing the Eighth District of Texas. Brady joined the whip team as deputy whip in 2003. As a member of congress, he has focused on international trade, technology, tax reform and closing safe havens around the globe for criminals who flee American justice. He is best known as author of the Federal Sunset Act which would abolish obsolete agencies and eliminate duplication by placing an expiration date on every federal program where they must justify their existence to taxpayers or face elimination. Brady was born in Vermillion, S.D., and received his B.S. in mass communications in 1990. Prior to serving in congress, Brady was a chamber of commerce executive for 18 years. Brady also served 6 years in the Texas. House of Representatives, earning distinction as one of the ten best legislators for children and family issues and legislative standout for campaign finance reform. In 1994 he was named one of five outstanding young Texans.

From KLTV News - The Woodlands congressman arrested on DUI charge in South Dakota

A Republican congressman from The Woodlands has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence in South Dakota.

Clay County Sheriff Andy Howe says a state trooper pulled over 50-year-old U-S Rep Kevin Brady Friday night for a problem with the taillights of his vehicle.Howe says it was homecoming weekend at the University of South Dakota, so officers were on the alert for driving violations including manning sobriety checkpoints.Brady is a graduate of the University of South Dakota.
