After the county honored Don Rounds, as the Hughes County volunteer of the year, Matt Michels, the speaker of the night got up and gave a speech about liberty and Republican values.

He also had us on the edge our seats with this one. (mp3 file)

I was fortunate to sit at a table with longtime lobbyist *the* Jeremiah Murphy. He introduced himself, as did I. And upon hearing my name he apologized, as he noted "I should have introduced myself as anonymous." (good one.)

Also at the table was his son and fellow lobbyist Jerry Murphy, Representative Cooper Garnos, and equally notable Republicans in the form of Brown County GOP Chairman Isaac Latterell, (SDWC reader and) GOP activist Aaron Lorenzen, and South Dakota Right to Life Lobbyist Jenna Haeger:

I'll have more on the Michels speech as I get through it (probably early next week) and reduce the file size.

But let it be said that a good time was had by all.

With Daugaard and Michels, GOP has an embarrassment of riches for 2010. Two solid, well-respected, smart guys. Come to think of it - that would be a hell of a ticket.

I have known Matt Michels for years and he would be a great candidate for any office, but the State of South Dakota would be blessed to have him in the Governor's office in 2011. As people begin to look at candidates, he has a background that will grab attention and I hope he is the next Governor. Interestingly, Yankton isn't overly politically active, but if Matt is the GOP candidate in 2010, three out of four elections will have had a Yanktonian in the Gubernatorial race.

Matt Michels would be a great Governor. We could use a class act like him in the Mansion. He is smart and has a really diverse background which would lend him to leading this great State of South Dakota. Go Matt!!!!!!!!!!

When they hold the special session (supposedly at the end of November) , since he's left them already, I think his colleagues should expel him from the caucus. Sure. At that point it's only going to be symbolic. But since he's already said he's running again in the near future, sometimes symbolism is enough.

It's about health, not potential promiscuity.

As the only South Dakota blogger out with 5 daughters, I feel I need to weigh in on the whole discussion that's occurring with regards to the HPV vaccine, and Governor Rounds' proposal to make it available. My family (including my three oldest girls) watched my mom, their grandmother, succumb slowly and painfully to cancer which spread throughout her body. If a similar fate from a different type of cancer was preventable through a simple shot, why wouldn't anyone advocate for it? At the age most of my kids are going to be getting it, they're still playing with barbies, and negative influences such as most of the programming on MTV, and other assorted trashy television is verboten in my house. All they're going to know about this vaccination is that it's a shot, just like for teatnus or measles. They'll go "Ow, I don't want a shot," and that will be it. Just another mark on their vaccination record. One check box for DPT, one for HPV, and so on...
