Bruce Whalen TV Ad - Taking Herseth to Task

Check out the new Bruce Whalen TV AD which takes after Herseth on her comments on the pro-choice teleconference.

It's going to be a fight for the last few weeks.

When everything goes to shit, when your campaign is floundering, you always have "Pro-Life, Pro-Family"
Anonymous said…
Ok...so stephanie's pro-choice...WE ALL KNOW THAT!! Bruce - what do you stand for besides being 'pro-family & pro-life'. TELL US ABOUT YOUR ISSUES!! Nobody has any idea what you stand for!

They definitly wasted money on that ad...and it's not like they can afford to waste the small amount of gas money that they have left.

So... where does it say that Herseth is ashamed to be from South Dakota?

I'm a die hard Vikings fan, but I hate to admit that they're not that great this year. I'm a father, but I hate to admit that my kids sometimes get unruly at the mall.

Bruce Whalen had almost no credibility after that the wikipedia incident. Now he has none.

"Bruce Whalen is a Republican. I hate to admit that, but he is."

I'm not ashamed to be a Republican, I just wish we had a candidate that would get over 25% of the vote against Stephie.

She has an actual voting record. Why not use that against her instead of trying to make it sound like she's ashamed to be from South Dakota?
Anonymous said…
Bruce Whalen actually does make me embarrassed to be from South Dakota. The first news he makes is spreading lies about Herseth being impregnated by her Chief of Staff. And now, his first ad claims that she's embarrassed to be from South Dakota, even though she never said such a thing. Is this the best that we can do in South Dakota?
Anonymous said…
lighten up people. so bruce whalen lies... they all lie... why are you surprised?

bruces problem is that herseth is very popular and shes not as liberal as most democrats... she supports the nra, votes against gay marriage, votes with the republicans on lots of issues, isnt a cut and runner on iraq, etc.

he didnt have a choice but to lie. that's just how politics goes. don't act like your all upset just because brucelied. they all lie. thats the way it works. wise up!

KELO has a story on their site about the levels of financial support each candidate has received. They looked through the public filings and reported that over the summer, "Herseth raised about $200,000 during the period, while Whalen took in about $35,000... Whalen, of Pine Ridge, has a little more than $18,000 in the bank..."

I guess the Republican donors in South Dakota were turned off by the wikipedia incident. I don't think this ad is going to change their minds.
Anonymous said…
um, well, i thought the ad was kinda good....i rips the mask off The Princess, who we all know is more of a Georgetown/NARAL woman than anything else she is...

I am tired of this kind of crap. Bruce Whalen hasn't given us any reason to vote for him, he hasn't told us what he believes, or what he will do in Congress. Congress doesn't have the authority to outlaw abortion, and they don't even get a vote on judges. So who cares if he thinks all abortions should be illegal? He won't be able to do anything about it in Congress anyway. He might as well be against the drought -- Congress has just as much authority over rain as they do over abortion. He either knows this and thinks the voters are dumb enough not to know it, or he hasn't taken a high school civics class. I'm sick of candidates who treat voters like we're stupid, and I'm sick of candidates who sling mud instead of telling us where they stand.
Anonymous said…
9:45 - i've never heard herseth claim she was anything but pro-choice. how can it be a "mask" if she never claimed to be anything but pro-choice?
Anonymous said…
The only mask herseth wears is the one that says "democrat" I'll bet there are 50 republicans in congress who vote with the democrats more than herseth does. she's endorsed by the friggin NRA for chrissakes and she wants to drill for oil in the outer continental shelf.

I wish we had a green party in South Dakota, or at least a liberal democrat on the ballot. she's way too moderate for me.
Anonymous said…
This thing looks like it was recorded on an old VHS camcorder circa 1989. Compare his ad to Herseth's ad. Her's is well produced, and tells people what she's done in Congress. His is cheap, not fully truthful, and doesn't say anything about his positions on the issues.

Whalen probably can't afford a professional PR firm like Herseth and I'll bet Lee Beard borrowed his mom's old camcorder to shoot this ad. At least it's in color...
Anonymous said…
Anon 9:57 - I don't think the problem is that Whalen thinks the voters are stupid. The problem is that he thinks they share the same mediocre mentality that he has. Unfortunately, a few of them do.

Whalen has got to do a better job of getting his name out there and telling people what he stands for. And its got to be more than abortion. I will never, ever vote for a Democrat and I've talked to a lot of my friends who are also conservative. I'll bet I've talked to 15 people who say they won't vote for Herseth, but only one of them even knew Bruce Whalen's name. Bruce will get votes for being a Republican, but if the majority of people voting for him don't even know who he is, he's got a big time problem.

Even worse, I know of a lot of people who claim to be conservative Republicans who are voting for Herseth because they say she's the kind of democrat they can support (to me, there is no such thing). Whalen has got to start getting out and meeting people. The problem with the tv add is that everyone in the state knows her position on abortion. Diedrich did a good job of telling people last time. If this is Whalen's only add, its not going to be enough.

He should think about getting in his car, driving around the state telling voters where he stands on the issues. The fact that most conservatives have never heard of him makes me wonder what he's been doing for the past year. He can't even update his own website. I hope we do a better job finding a good candidate to run against her next year.
Anonymous said…
Does anyone know who the woman in the ad is? She looks familiar...
Anonymous said…
dakota liberal - Stephanie is moderate. So is South Dakota. Stephanie is a good fit for our state. That's why she's in Congress, and that's why she'll win in a landslide this year. The nuts on the far right and the far left have more than their share in Congress. It's about time those of us in the middle had a voice in Congress.

Bruce Whalen is the Republican Jeff Moser. I hate to admit it, but he is.
Anonymous said…
10:33 -- Jeff Moser! LOL!

Whalen is a bigger joke than Moser (at least Moser didn't spread lies about John Thune's personal life). He's even worse than crazy Jan Berkout (remember him?). Whalen might be the worst congressional candidate in the history of the state - and that's saying something.
Anonymous said…
He is as crazy as Berkout, great stuff, almost had to close my office door I was laughing so loud about that and the Moser reference.

By the way, Bruce is against the Drought. And Cancer and well as Crime.

Got my vote.

65/35 Herseth. And only that big of a blow out because we all know some women will never vote for a woman.
Anonymous said…
Jan Berkout, Jeff Moser or Bruce Whalen for craziest candidate for Congress?

That's a tough one, but I think the wikipedia thing seals the deal for Bruce.
Anonymous said…
He doesn't have enough money to run this ad so its not going to matter. Even if he did, he won't beat Herseth (just being honest). If the State Party sends a dime to this clown, I'll never contribute to them again. We've got a lot of tough races out there for State Senate, PUC and School and Public Lands. Every dime they put into this loser is a dime that isn't going towards a competitive race. Jarod Johnson needs the money. John Koskan needs the money. Dick Kelly certainly needs the money running against Moneybags Hiedipriem.

Bruce Whalen sealed his fate a long time ago. If we waste money on him, I'm done giving.
Anonymous said…
I predict Whalen wins:

Whalen 55%, Berkout 35%, Moser 10%.

-- you didn't think I was talking about the actual election did you? ;-)
Anonymous said…
"It's going to be a fight for the last few weeks."

$18,000 versus $500,000 is not much of a fight, PP. Even the most partisan Republican will admit that...

When a candidate for federal office's cash on hand is less than my personal cash on hand, that's not a good sign.

If I were Bruce's staff, I'd be demanding this month's check up front...

Stephanie Herseth murders babies and Bruce is a good Christian with some Irish blood in him. I think it's good that he's telling people the truth about the murder of millions of innocent babies. There is no other issue more important than abortion and you sick people need to wake up to that fact. As long as we're killing babies nothing else matters - do you really think the drought is just a coincidence? God will punish those who mock him. If I were a farmer I'd be praying that Bruce wins.

We will all stand before Him on judgement day and he knows how you vote. Bruce Whalen is a righteous Christian and he has my vote. All of you who mock God will pay the price down the road.
Anonymous said…
AMEN! I'm voting for Bruce too!
Anonymous said…
11:37 Stephanie has never murdered anyone.

How many innocents have died in Iraq the past 3 years? 600,000+

How many people have been murdered in Sudan in the past 10 years yet we don't lift a finger? 1,000,000+

How many people have died from famine in the past 10 years? Millions.

If you spent even 10% as much time and money worrying about the living as you spend on the abortion issue, the world might be a better place. God would smile on you.
Anonymous said…
Oh shi*, 11:37. I had better vote for Bruce or else, is that what you are saying? Babies, babies, babies. This is one old GOPer who's really sick of this. Guess Bruce can stop now as God will deliver the election to him.

Look, is it ok to take the morning after pill. Seems so. Well, isn't that a baby, baby, baby. I'm sick, sick, sick of this and you, you, you 11:37. Form your own nutjob party and leave us alone.

By the way, Berkout was the craziest and would destroy Whalen both intellectually and in crass comments (imagine if he had run against the princess).

This race is as dead as was Thune-Moser.
Anonymous said…
11:37 - Would you vote for Bruce if he didn't have that good Irish blood flowing through his veins and watering down the Native American blood? That's what it sounds like when you make a remark like that.

The woman in the commercial appears to be Lora Hubbel, Sioux Falls' resident Crazy Christian Conservative lady. She's the woman who ran for mayor on an anti-pornography platform.
Anonymous said…
Bruce is anti-porn.
Anonymous said…
Post 1:03 PM I agree with you!

I am also one old GOPer who is also really sick of this! It doesn’t matter how morally corrupt a candidate may be, if they are against abortion they are next to God. All the other Christian values that they totally destroy just doesn’t mean anything. They are anti-abortion and that is all that God and the Churches in South Dakota care about! All other Christian values are out the window!

I am a Republican and a darn good one! I am just sick that we have allowed the religious nuts and the churches to take over our party! What in the heck is wrong with us and the churches that are supposed to preach and value ALL of the Christian values? Please tell me, what in the heck is wrong with us?

It’s unbelievable! Totally unbelievable! And we just stood there and watched it happen!

I have had the opportunity to meet Bruce Whalen several times throughout South Dakota while he was campaigning...where have you all been? Oh, blogging of course. Stephy on the other hand has her head so far in clouds talking over everyone trying to impress them on stage and then has her "rock star" body guards around there is no opportunity to visit with her and ask her questions she might not want to answer. I will not vote for someone like her who is so "above" everyone and afraid to campaign SD style....door to door and face to face...she needs to leave her "handlers" behind. She needs to become real. We can't deny that in SD morals do matter. Some day she will face defeat. I admire the courage of Bruce to run against someone who is deemed "untouchable" and litterally is out of touch and unwilling to be seen mingling with the common "folk" of South Dakota.

look, 9:01, I just watched the last 20 minutes of the PBS debate. This guy couldn't beat Napolean Dynamite's buddy Pedro in a student counsel race. He is simply an awful candidate.

Plus, I loved it when he said that Randy Frederick asked him to be the standard bearer for the party. Great. Randy and Bruce, leading us forward.

I'm voting for Rounds, Jarrod Johnson, and leaving the spot for Congress blank.
Anonymous said…
Peter V...

Congress does actually vote on issues that effect abortion and they give Federal Funding to organizations (i.e. Planned Parenthood) that are federally funded.

If you think that a Member of Congress has no affect on the abortion issue you are VERY dilusional.

And in case you haven't noticed....the abortion issue will be what drives voters this year. Nothing else is exciting people. The Whalen campaign might actually be on to something here.

This ad is comparable to Thune’s “I’m a DC resident” ad. All of the sour grapes I am reading on this thread is either a bunch of Herseth supporters afraid that South Dakota will get the truth or a bunch of misguided Republicans who are giving the Native Americans reasons to stay with the Democrat Party.

Bruce is a good man who wants to fix what is wrong with his people, and what he sees as the same problem that the rest of us are making…accepting government dependency.

I am astonished at the lack of foresight by the South Dakota Republican Party. Here we have a South Dakota reservation ban abortions as we debate HB1215. This is a beautiful opportunity for the Republican Party to have reconciliation with Native Americans and remove the stronghold the Democrats have had on the reservations. Why is the South dakota Republican Party MIA on this one. I can expect that lack of response the Drive-By media has given the Whalen’s press releases, because that Democrat stronghold has no chance of being reconciled with the Republican Party.
Anonymous said…
First of all, what was he thinking going negative in his first ad. We all know that is not what the people of South Dakota want. Of course as a Political Science student I know very well that it is his only hope to gain some votes. A truly good negative ad must also say why he is better thatn his opponent. Second of all, in response to the people who ask where Representative Herseth has been while Bruce Whalen has been campaigning...She was doing the job we elected her to do in Washington D.C. Congress did not recess till October so of course she couldn't have been here for every single day. Representative Herseth has already recieved my vote through absentee ballot and has my full support. I am pro-choice, but that does not make me a baby killer. I have not had an abortion, nor would I. I am pro-choice because I cannot know the situation that each pregnant woman faces. Abortion ideally would be rare, legal, and safe. What does Whalen stand for other than pro-life-pro-family??? As a college student with my major I watch all the debates and read everything, yet I still cant come up with much more than pro life when thinking about Whalen. We voters need to take a stand and elected someone who will tell us what they want to do for us.
Anonymous said…
There's a reason that Democrats have a stronghold on the reservations. Democrats care about people who find themselves in the underdog position, and the majority of Republicans have demonstrated that they do not care.
Could that be why the Republicans aren't making their move now?
Anonymous said…
How about Larry Mangels for poorest candidate? I love underdogs, I'm voting for Bruce! So what if he isn't a great speaker, I'd send him to Washington because he'll vote like I would. That's what matters.
Anonymous said…
been there said...I'd send him to Washington because he'll vote like I would. That's what matters.

Unless the only issue you care about is pro-life issues how do you know he will vote like you would? That's his only message, what's his views on Iraq? North Korea? Immigration?

If by some miracle he got elected he might have a handful of votes on pro-life issues versus hundreds of votes on national security, education, the economy, etc... What's his position on those issues?

Whalen supporters have their wagons hitched to a one issue candidate and that one issue is so small when compared to the other issues our country will be facing in the coming 2 years.

Whalen has limited funds so why spend them on ad spots that tout something everyone already knows he stands for? He complains that he isn't getting any exposure and then turns around and wastes an opportunity to get his message out...
Anonymous said…
Whalen went negative on his first ad because of his campaign manager -- his campaign manager is an immature 20-something from Louisiana who does not know anything about South Dakota, and really only knows how to "campaign" by making up lies and being nasty. Whalen is a one-issue candidate and will not do us one bit of good in DC
Anonymous said…
I just saw this ad. Whalen has my vote for worst congressional candidate ever, and biggest liar. If you don't believe Stephanie fights for South Dakota, ask the Yankton family of the soldier that was wounded in Iraq. I'm sure they will share what she did to help him. She is one heck of a Congresswoman.
Anonymous said…
I'm a young Republican and for the first time I am ashamed to be what I am. And Whalen, you should be ashamed of yourself. What kind of example are you setting for us.
Anonymous said…
I hope you Republicans start standing up to those in your party who can't think beyond one or two issues that involve delving into personal lives. Is South Dakota on its way to becoming a police state?
This is very scary.
Anonymous said…
South Dakota isn't on it's way to becoming a police state. THAT'S drama.

I'm an independent that voted for Stephanie in the last election. She has disappointed me. I'm voting for Bruce. His biggest problem, as far as I can see, is that he ISN'T political enough to get his message out there. In my opinion, that's very refreshing.

He DOES have opinions. He DOES have views. And, he IS exactly who he says he is. I'm not a Native American, but I would love to see this state elect one to see what he can do for the people here. At least he DOES put himself out there and actually say what he stands for. She blows smoke. I listened to the KOTA debates... he's intelligent... and sincere. I don't know, call me crazy, but I'm sick of the politically correct blowhards who claim to be all for us here in the state, and then go to DC to be all about themselves.

Bruce Whalen seems to care about people. REFRESHING.

I'm sick of the status quo... I've decided to open my eyes and dig deeper to uncover who candidates really are. When I dug... I didn't like what I saw in Herseth. I don't like her voting record. I want change.

I'm voting Whalen.
Anonymous said…
Herseth won by like 53% in the last election, right? Had she been in public office before?

Get off Whalen and take a good look at her to see if you really want this woman representing you again. I don't. I can't see where she's helped us at all.

She comes off as a politician. Period.

The last poster is right. Bruce might not be polished, but he's for South Dakota.
