9 to 5 isn't just a movie. It was the vote to throw Cecelia Fire Thunder out of office.

She survived a huge monetary loan from another tribe. But that abortion clinic thing was just a little too much according to the Rapid City Journal:

Cecelia Fire Thunder survived two earlier attempts to remove her from office since she was elected in November 2004 as the tribe's first female president.

This time, the issue was over South Dakota's new abortion ban that does not include exceptions for rape or incest.

After Gov. Mike Rounds signed the bill, Fire Thunder vowed to work to open a Planned Parenthood clinic on the reservation, beyond the reach of state law.

Will Peters, a tribal council member who filed the impeachment complaint, said Fire Thunder didn't have the tribal council's approval to pursue the project.

"The bottom line is the Lakota people were adamantly opposed to abortion on our homelands. The president was involved in unauthorized political actions," he said after the vote, which came after two hours of private deliberation.
Read it all here, and check out tomorrow's Rapid City Journal for the full story.

It was nice of the guy to speak for all Lakota people as if they don't have opinions of their own. He must've learned that from Leslee Unruh.

Number of legal abortions on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation this year: 0.

Number of legal abortions on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation next year: 0.

The council must be taking plays from the Republican play book: "solve" problems that don't exist, divide people, ignore the pressing issues in front of your nose and torpedo your own people in the process. I'm thinking about moving to Kyle.

Number of abortions on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation next year if the Tribal Council didn't stand up to Cecelia Fire Thunder: ??

Still 0. She announced that there were no plans to build a clinic. Screw a corrupt Police Department, screw a judicial system that can be described as "incompetent" at best, screw the housing situation, and when you get down to it, there's really not even a reason to make the schools better. Until after we get rid of Cecilia for making an offhanded comment. And while we're so concerned about the unborn, there really isn't a reason to take action to make sure pregnant women are getting the health care they need, there's no reason to take action to try to get pregnant women to stop smoking, and there is certainly nothing the Tribal Council should do to deal with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome--which, by the way, is estimated to affect as high as 80% of the children born in Pine Ridge. Seriously, the OST Tribal Council just stamped its ticket to GOP heaven. And you think Cecelia was a wild one? Wait until White Plume takes over.

Way to take action Tribal Council!

When you get into bed with Planned Parenthood in South Dakota you are finished politically.
Note to Stan.

Adelstein, Fire Thunder, who will Planned Parenthood destroy next?
Letting other people do your dirty work is the best way to ensure your longevity.
You ruin people and beliefs along the way but what the hell, it's still someone else and not you so that makes ok, I guess.

Anon 8:30, and anon 10:56, your ire is likely directed at people of your own party. As we all know, there aren't a heck of a lot of Republicans on Reservations. The people whose hand your biting are the same ones (along with their dead relatives) who fed you Tim Johnson four years ago.

Their vote reflects one of the core values of their culture. I don't think it reflects a sudden presence of full-fledged Republicanism running rampant on the Reservation.

More democrat in-fighting. Ha! "Big tent" that!

Rest assured, abortion activists on both sides, the removal of Cecilia Fire Thunder had nothing to do with abortion.

Abortion was merely the most recent pretext used by Ms. Fire Thunder's political opponents, who have tried unsuccessfully several times to impeach her. Abortion was merely a horse to ride when miles needed to be covered.

The tribal council vote should not be interpreted as the will of the people, nor even that of the tribal council, on the issue of abortion. It was all about getting Ms. Fire Thunder out of office.
