District 32 Debate: Abortion, Adelstein, and a Superman cape

The Rapid City Journal is reporting this morning that the District 32 Legislative candidate forum sounded as if it might have been a little less bland than some of them have a tendency to be:
"I believe we need to promote a culture of life and respect for life at all levels of government," Republican Elli Schwiesow, who supports the abortion ban, said.

Democrat Tom Katus, who opposes the ban, held up a Christian Science Monitor with the headline "South Dakota's stark abortion choice" and said, "I don't think that's the headline that ought to be there."

and...

"I firmly believe that the hand that rocks the cradle directs the nation," Schwiesow said. "I'm dedicated to strengthening families. I've been a teacher, a homeroom mom, a soccer mom and a paper-route mom. I love children."

and..

Katus, who is a consultant to small businesses, colleges and foundations, is a long-time Democratic Party activist.

Adelstein is crossing party lines to support Katus, and Monday night, he referred to Adelstein's spoken-word performance Saturday with the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra performed Peter Boyer's "Ellis Island," a celebration of immigrants and diversity.

"I want to represent all our people," Katus said. He made a point to include "Our straight folks. Our gay folks" - an indirect reference to the gay-marriage ban on the ballot this November.

and..

Democrat Suzan Nolan, a retired school counselor and English teacher, began her short introduction by donning her signature cape, similar to Superman's but with a "Z."

She promised to take issues seriously but to not take herself too seriously. She also promised not to over-promise results. "In general, all of us are for good and against evil," she said.
Read it all here. But is she for truth, justice and the American way?

Sorry. I prefer my candidates not to wear capes. It reminds me of the Republican candidate from several years back who was a great gal..... But she would also go door to door with her parrot on her shoulder. Unless you're of a pirate persuasion, I don't think it earned her many votes (Ahrrrr... You lie, PP).

And with this Democratic candidate wearing a cape, I've got the same opinion. Unless she's running in a neighborhood populated by superheroes, forget it.

Even Edna from the Incredibles would agree. "No capes"

"I love children"...good for you Elli, anything else you got for us in Pierre?

Ellie's a soccer mom, a paper route mom, a homeroom mom, and a mom. Tom Katus can't claim that!

What more do you need?

World estimations of the number of terminations carried out each year is somewhere between 20 and 88 million.

3,500 per day / 1.3 million per year in America alone.

50% of that 1.3 million claimed failed birth control was to blame.

A further 48% had failed to use any birth control at all.

And 2% had medical reasons.

That means a stagering 98% may have been avoided had an effective birth control been used.

Bill Clinton once said that abortions should be available , safe and RARE. He is a wise man.

I'd like to see an ultrasound in every clinnic to provide a more informed choice,
before going through with something they may regret.

I'd also like to see effective birth control made available to all who can't afford it.

Have you seen ( HOT OFF THE SHOW! Throw-away babies )

Something for Pro-choicers and Pro-lifers to concider.....

I am a 98% pro-lifer, 2% Pro-choicer, who has no religious convictions at all . I didn't need the fear of god or anything else to come to my decision, just a good sense of what is right and wrong.
You see we were all once a fetus. Is it beyond the realm of possibilities that when your mother first learned she was carrying you, she may have considered her options? What if she had decided to terminate? Would that have been OK?
You would not exist, if you have children they would not exist, and your (husband or wife) would be married to someone else. You would have been deprived of all your experiences and memories. In this day and age with terminations being so readily available and so many being carried out, if you make it to full term you can consider yourself lucky.
Lucky you had a mother that made the choice of life for you.

Don't you think they all deserve the same basic human right, LIFE?

At the point of conception is when life began for you. This was the start of your existence. Your own personal big bang. Three weeks after conception heart started to beat. First brain waves recorded at six weeks after conception. Seen sucking thumb at seven weeks after conception.

I am convinced that in the not too distant future, people will look back at many of the practices of today with disbelief and horror.

If conception is NOT when life begins, and a clump of cells is just that and not a living human being.
Then at least concider this-

Soon after you were conceived you were no more than a clump of cells.
This clump of cells was you at your earliest stage, you had plenty of growing to do but this clump of cells was you none the less. Think about it.
Aren't you glad you were left unhindered to develope further.
Safe inside your mother's womb until you were born.
