This is an excellent response. It would have been easy to attack. Scott is taking the high road and that should be enough to get him to Pierre.

I'm supporting Dick, but that was a classy, dare I say "Roundsesque" answer from Scott.

Although, not to nitpick, but the statement that "only one politician in the state is running negative ads" is a little tricky. I guess Jack Billion has the shady (and ironically named) "Citizens for Honest and Open Government" to do his dirty work for him.

awww... poor scott.
Anonymous said…
Yep, very well done, says "look how much harder I've worked while Kelly's been asleep at the switch and now is desperate" without being specific.

I thought that the "only one politician in the state is running negative ads" bit was a home run.

I am not impressed with Scott's response. I do not see Kelly's ad as a huge attack on Scott. Everything in the ad is the truth and maybe Scott should just own up to it. I guess he's feeling a little sensitive these days.

6:11-everything in Dick's ad is
true?!!!!! Next time the
cabinet door is open please
watch out and don't hit your
head on it!!!! Your comment sounds a lot like negative, nervous whining!!!
Anonymous said…
6:11 - any ad that includes the words "I hear he is looking at..." is a negative, untrue ad. I could say that I hear Dick Kelly is thinking about touching little boys but that dosen't make it true. The Kelly ad was desperate.
Anonymous said…
So what exactly is false in the Kelly ad??
Anonymous said…
anon 7:11,
As I am sure you are aware, it is very difficult to prove a negative. So please provide us with what is true in the Kelly attack ad? Also, provide sources for you information as the ad leaves those out.
Anonymous said…
Slick ad. But did you expect anything but slickness from Scott?
Anonymous said…
Isn't Whalen running negative ads also?
Anonymous said…
WHAT A PHONY! HE IS THE ONE WHO ATTACKED KELLY FIRST! this ad is completely asisine...and another weasely and slick trial lawyer
Anonymous said…
You people are all silly. I guess Scott has a lot of people scared.
Anonymous said…
maybe Heidupreem's wife come out and do an ad denouncing "negative attacks" too!!

PREDICTION: Heeideprim's buddy Dave Kranz will write about this tomorrow and make him look like a victim

That is the best television ad for a state legislative candidate I've ever seen. He has successfully turned Kelly's negative ad back on him, without being negative himself.

And, if it is in fact true that Heidipriem has knocked on 6,000 doors and as a previous commenter said, that Kermit Staggers has knocked on more doors for Kelly than Kelly himself has, than this thing really is over.

The state party shouldn't give a penny to any candidate who won't get off their rear and do the basic, retail politics that wins elections. That money could have come in handy in any number of legislative districts.
Anonymous said…
Hey 6:11...everything in the ad is true?

Do you have an empty 12-pack beside you?

"I hear he's thinking about a state income tax?"

That ad, by itself, sets a new low standard for campaign ads. If stations accept that and put it up on the air, we pretty much can say anything we want.

Dick is getting beaten and Bockorny et al in the new power wing of the small tent (Gods, Guns and Gays) GOP thought this last Hail Mary could save Kelly.

It won't.

Boy, if I was a Republican legislative candidate (and I thank Jesus every morning that I am not) and I saw I got $250 or even $1,000 dollars while Dick Kelly got $40,000, I'd be lining up outside Rounds, Thune and Bockorny's doors asking for a recap.

Bokorney has proved that he knows nothing about SD politics. He go back to the slime patch they call K Street. He has screwed up Kelly's campaign beyond repair.
Anonymous said…
Hey PP when you gonna post on the yes on 6 campaign fraud and lies. I understand that Roger Hunt and Leslie Unruh have attempted yet another major fraud.
In fact, I think Roger broke the law. I demand an immediate special session.

Hey 10:19, your ignorance is showing. The special session on Sutton is not about a crime, it's about breaking SENATE RULES during the session.

So your call for a special session on Hunt is asinine

This ad is, by definition, a negative ad. Heidepriem's mailings have been negative. Typical of liberal elitists to cast stones & then cry like little babies when their records are challenged. We sympathize, Scott. We know you're the victim and Dick Kelly is the big, bad bully.

Correction. The ad should say, "In the entire state of South Dakota, there are a few campaigns running negative ads. I've been doing it, and in this ad, I will continue to attack. People are sick and tired....blah, blah, blah."

Scott's got 4-L syndrome. Liberal lackluster lawyer loser.

Hey anon 11:40,
I guess we know where your principles are...it is okay to break the law and still be an elected moral leader but it is not okay to be accused of breaking a Senate rule. And by the way, your ignorance is showing...take a look at joint rules. The legislature can go after Hunt for this.

When did Heideprim change parties? Who is Backorny? Who went negative first? We really need to review the facts here because I'm WAY behind and too many people know WAY more than i do...please help

HEY LOOK

This might change the tenor of the race:

"State Sen. Dick Kelly was hospitalized Thursday evening after suffering severe cardiac discomfort, according to Hugh Weber, who is working with his re-election campaign. Kelly and his wife, Mary, were dining with Governor Mike Rounds at the time. He was taken to the Heart Hospital of South Dakota where doctors say he will remain for more testis and observation. Kelly was resting comfortably, Weber said in a press release."

PP, what do you have on Kelly's hospitalization on his "cardiac episode" while at dinner with the Gov last night? Along with his condition, please try and include where they were dining and what each person ordered. Thanks

Good thing Rounds didn't get his "sick tax" on medical services passed when he prime sponsored the bill as the senate majority leader.

Dick Kelly wouldn't have been able to afford care if Rounds had gotten his wish of taxing the sick.

Good thing Heidepriem was in the senate to vote against Rounds' "sick tax". Dick Kelly should thank Heidepriem for that.

Hey Anon 10:20 - Way to try to benefit politically from Dick Kelly's near-death.
Anonymous said…
I hear they were eating at The Black Watch when Dick took ill.

No. The Black Watch closed when Republican City officials bought the failing restaurant from Dick Kelly for top dollar and turned it into a parking garage for the Washington Pavillion.
Anonymous said…
Could Rounds dine with Bill Earley next? Maybe invite Roger Hunt too?
Anonymous said…
Maybe Heidepriem next ad will be his wife saying she is a long time rep. who is voting for Scott. By the way Scott wins this one big.
Anonymous said…
I saw Tim Robbins on the Craig Fergueson Show last night. When he walked out, I thought he looked like Scott Heidepriem. Then he opened his liberal yap, and I was sure it was Heidepriem.
Anonymous said…
They did forget to mention Heidepriem's support for flag burning & his empassioned speech against a flag burning bill when he was in the legislature.

I would like to see Heidepriem put out an ad defending his ultra-liberal voting record. Then we'd get a good idea of what he's all about. One thing's for sure, he and his wife love putting out ads in which they stake out the "victim" position.
Anonymous said…
1:32, When's the last time anybody burned a flag? Do we have a rampant problem there?

Even without a flag burning amendment, it's illegal to burn anything in city limits. And anybody burning a flag would probably get beat up before they got arrested.

Do you have anything more than empty demagoguery to talk about?
Anonymous said…
1:32

Since when is freedom of speech a liberal concept? It's Founding Fathers all the way.

You're sick. Philosophically CONFLICTED.
Anonymous said…
The modern day Republican Party doesn't have anything but demagoguery.

Their entire agenda is built around issues that they have absolutely no intention of implementing but use to scare voters.

Think about this for a minute. Gay Marriage. Abortion. People like Mike Rounds and John Thune campaign on these things to rile up their base, but when they are confronted with the issues, they are no where to be found. Rounds can't run fast enough when he's asked about his signature on the abortion bill. Do you see John Thune campaigning to pass the quasi-marital relationship amendment? He's nowhere to be found when it doesn't serve his personal political career.

It's really kind of pathetic if you think about it.
