Suing the state... Party Switcher.... Yeow. Here's the hardest hitting TV ad to come out yet

Here's the one I've kept missing when I'm in capture mode. Here's the hardest hitting TV ad I've seen yet that Dick Kelly is running against Scott Heidepreim. It's a bash fest.

The only "bash" that's questionable is the income tax line...though that's certainly the talk in Sioux Falls so I can see where she would have heard it.

Scott's words are very carefully chosen in his radio ad...like a good lawyer...suggesting that he has never supported an income tax in the past. It does leave things open in the future. With all of the programs he's proposes, I can't see how he wouldn't look at it.

Before folks monkeypile on Kelly for going negative, I want to give him credit for taking Scott to task for some of his positions...especially the lawsuit issue. He's been given a free ride by the media and most folks in his district are confused about who he really is.
Anonymous said…
The last poster is exactly right. Scott Heidepreim is not an evil guy. He is, however, a cagey and clever trial lawyer who has carefully packaged himself and his positions. It is perfectly fair for Dick Kelly to bring up these questions.
Anonymous said…
IT'S ALL TRUE....and it will be debated ad nauseum as Heidepriem tries to climb the greasy pole and became governor or US senator, which is his life-long ambition

when his own party rejected him as a flaky non-starter, he got mad and switched parties...it's all about him and his massive ego and the liberal in Sioux Falls egging him on because they can say "he's a former Republican"

treason doesn't go down well in south dakota
Anonymous said…
I suppose it could be cut off, but does this ad have a disclaimer and does it ever ask you to "vote for Kelly"?
Anonymous said…
Remember this: Heidepriem has deep connections to within the Argus Leader and KELO-TV so they will do nothing but slobber all over him for being so wonderful...it's up to Kelley to make the case and he's doing a great job. People who like Republican governors in this state should remember to thank Kelley for beating Heideprim

PP:

I'm not sure where your readers get the idea that Heidepriem wants to be governor. He saw his best friend Jim Abbot get womped by our Governor and he doesn't want that. His whole ambition is to be Senator and he is planning to run against Thune. The sad thing is that the Thune people haven't done anything about this. Kelley at least has guts to slug it out. And if he doesn't win, Heidepriem will just start filing lawsuits against everyone until he "wins" by litigation.

...well if this is all true maybe the media should ask Hiedeprem if he has any plans to run for higher office

Heidepriem Bilks Taxpayers Through Blackmail Lawsuit

I don’t think the educators understand where the state gets its money, the taxpayers. Now they want to sue us:

Calling South Dakota's funding of public schools unconstitutionally low, at least 56 school districts will fund a lawsuit seeking changes to the state's school funding formula.

...

So who is really behind this? The Democrats:

State senate Democratic leader Garry Moore thinks the schools will win in court.

Two democratic candidates for governor blamed Rounds for underfunding schools and forcing the lawsuit.

"Yet another lawsuit as the result of this governor's lack of leadership," Jack Billion said in a statement.

"If Governor Rounds had supported the Democrats' education plan, this lawsuit would not have happened," Dennis Wiese said, referring to Senate Democrats' proposal to raise school funding by $820 per student.

The Democrats can’t be honest and win elections, so they use public education as their propaganda tool. It is a shame that they are telling children that they are not getting an adequate education and the blame goes to the adults who are supposedly too greedy to give them more money. Daschle went to court and used Native Americans to try and steal an election, now his Party is going to court again and are using children to try and steal another election.

I am a friend of Heidrepreim and Kelly.

The ad shows two things:
1. the race is close;
2. the Republican Party continues to alienate attorneys who are some of their biggest supporters; look at post #2 in this string: "cagey and clever"--clearly implied in this ad and the attacks (fair or not on Scott) but would either party use these adjectives to describe an insurance agent/realtor? The Democrats are smart enough not to unnecessarily alienate important parts of their base; unfortunately, the Republican Party continues to encourage attorneys to vote and support Democrats.

Dick Kelly should win this race. He is the hometown boy who has served his area well. If he doesn't win, it may be because instead of going door to door he got bad advice and relied upon the party dollars.

On a related note, is it true that Republican candidates in tight races are mad because so much money is going to Kelly and a couple of others?
Anonymous said…
12:44 Attacking a candidate's wife and daughter - not cool. You should be deleted!
Anonymous said…
Nuclear Dick is desperate. DESPERATE! He knows he's goind to lose, so he throws in lies like "income tax".

Actually, listen to Rounds and look at the ads he runs in papers. His line is always that he opposes a personal income tax. Rounds purposely leaves the door open to a corporate income tax. Rounds has a record of growing government and raising taxes. He's the one you have to be afraid of.
Anonymous said…
Even dick's "shoulder dog" deserted him. When his dog left him you know he's in trouble.

1:48 -

How is listing her political contributions (public record when they're that big) an attack????

You must think that's a negative thing???

So you feel those liberal contributions are something she should hide, or be embarrassed of?

You must think they're embarrassing if you call listing them an attack.

Andy said: “treason doesn't go down well in south dakota” Well, I hope he isn’t talking about the Democrats that crossed over to support Senator Thune and Governor Rounds!

Fran said: “And if he doesn't win, Heidepriem will just start filing lawsuits against everyone until he "wins" by litigation.” Well, I thought that was the lesson learned from the last presidential election, just get the courts involved if you want to win. Seemed to work OK for our President Bush.

Heck, it’s all about politics, no substance just a lot of flapping of jaws. Just sit back and enjoy the battles, it’s better than watching HBO!
Anonymous said…
yikes...Heidepriem better get used to this. If I were him, I'd just retired to my mansion at Martha's Vineyard and count all my money.
Anonymous said…
Dude, Heidepriem's mansion is on Nantucket, not Martha's Vineyard, and it's right near Carly Simon and just over from Barbara Streissand's yacht
Anonymous said…
how many South Dakota people/small businesses did Heidepriem have to destroy through lawsuits to buy his mansion on Cape Cod or wherever?

if he wins his huge lawsuit against taxpayers, the only option is an income tax, so get your checkbooks out
Anonymous said…
Did I miss something? Is Heidepreim being accussed of suing the state over the education funding? Isn't the lead in that Scott Abdallah and isn't he Republican? Isn't Abdallah a huge supporter of Thune. Wasn't Abdallah almost U.S. Attorney until the FBI found out about his past?

Further, is Dick Kelly saying it is always wrong to sue the State and the State can do no wrong?

This commercial is an attack ad of the worst kind. It is It also shows the lack of character of Dick Kelly, his supporters and my republican party. I am ashamed to be a republican after seeing this ad.
Anonymous said…
7:51 -- you're a "Republican," yeah right, like Heidepriem is/was a "Republican." This ad does nothing but speak the truth and you liberal-loving wussies who pretend to be "Republicans" like Stan Adelstein can't stand it

The better use of the Hillary transformation ad is Heiderprim...he's the one who moved to Sioux Falls and switched parties in order to run for an office so he could run for Governor or Senator....it's like Hillary moving to New York and running from there just so she can run for president some day
Anonymous said…
ask Heidepriem how much of his donations (a lot) come from trial lawyers!? he's been shaking down lawyers in the state for donation for the past 6 months and they are getting sick of it
Anonymous said…
Heiedepriem is less a typical liberal than he is a raging elitist. He was an elitist when he was climbing the ranks of the Republican Party and he's an elitist now. He has become extremely bitter person ever since he lost a Republican primary when his moral superiority should have been obvious to everyone. I pray the Democrats keep pushing this guy...he'll be clobbered by gop.
Anonymous said…
for Lord's sakes Democrats can't we find somebody better than this be the face of the party? just read the comments here and if half of it's true he's a walking dead man in politics
Anonymous said…
Suing the taxpayers... I heard that some months ago. That's enough for me. Geez.. how much will his firm collect if they win that one?

Scott, if you want to sue all of us taxpayers, stay at home and do it in Sioux Falls. We don't need you or want you representing us in Pierre.

Seems like there should even be a conflict of interest... how can he be in the Legislature and sue taxpayers at the same time?
Anonymous said…
As a friend of Scott's, I'm shocked to learn that he is the source of all evil in South Dakota.

Funny. When he was a Republican no one seemed to think he was such a bad guy.

It's also nice to learn Scott has been bitter for the better part of two decades. Seems odd. I would have thought I would have noticed that. On the contrary, he is one of the most positive people I know.

I think the comments here reflect something interesting. Rightwing Republicans know Scott may be a force to be dealt with in the future so the knives are coming out.

Scott has always been bi-partisan, reaching across the aisle. He did it as a Republican. He's doing it as a Democrat.

Should you player haters be afraid of Scott? Yes, be afraid. Be very afraid.
Anonymous said…
"When he was a Republican no one seemed to think he was such a bad guy"

Officer Epp, are you kidding? Why do think we wouldn't elect him to anything higher back when he was with the GOP.

Back then he was an ultra liberal Republican who spoke on the floor if the Senate in favor of flag burning and baby killing.

Now that he's a Democrat... nothing has changed.

I'm hoping Scott H. gets his clock cleaned on Tuesday. I'm voting for Dick Kelly (and Yes on 6!)
Anonymous said…
Yes that is Melissa from Whalen's commercial, I suppose you win some you lose some.......
Yes that is Drake......he looks good.... now the ladies will be all over him.....you know with his boyish good looks and his clean cut pretty boy smile.
Anonymous said…
If Scott H. is suing the state, so is Russ Janklow. The second 7:51 is correct in that Gene Abdallah's son Scott is the lead attorney in the education lawsuit. Check the pleadings. The ad in question and this thread are two of the nastiest non"6" items we've seen this season.
Anonymous said…
Ooo. Melissa can trash talk me anytime. But then she has to spank me.
Anonymous said…
I'm not really concerned with who is trying this case or who the lead attorney is.

I'm concerned that Scott Heidepriem is asking for votes from the same people his firm is suing.

If his firm wins and receives the enormous fees, the people of District 13 will be paying a part of the bill.

Whether this goes directly to Scott or indirectly to him through the firm is not important. He stands to profit from a lawsuit against the people he wants to represent!
Anonymous said…
The Argus Leader has a podcast up right now that is a 'debate' between Heidepriem and Kelly.

Neither say much, but...

At the end, Heide says that he's proud of and won't apologize for the lawsuit.

As the ad says "that's not the change I'm looking for."
Anonymous said…
Drake's a nutjob city council has been. Is that all the better the wannabe-congressman could do?

I hope Republicans pin their hopes on him for the future of their party. Things are looking up for the dems with that guy in a race.
Anonymous said…
Just keep Drake busy in Sioux Falls. We don't want him back in Vermillion. (We like his side-kick Nathan Adams better; he refuses to campaign, be photographed, leave the house...)
Anonymous said…
what was his most important contribution to the city council?

Getting a resolution passed to honor USD d-days. most of the council didn't take him seriously anyway. He used to come to meetings late and joke around.

I'm not a drake basher but gosh, you repubs have to come up with a guy who can do better than resolutions and gladhanding.

In full disclosure I am one of the 56 people who voted for him.

My goodness! Why is it that no one has anything nice to say. That is the reason why I hate politics. People think they have to jump the fence to win. If you can not stay on your side of the fence and win for who you are or the positive things that you have done, then maybe you don't deserve to win. Vote for whoever you want - but be decent, my children are getting old enough to understand what is going on and it's sad when people cut down other people's views. Do you teach your children to be racist? I would guess not - but that is essentially the tone in most of the exchanges between democrats and republicans. Be who you are, be thankful that we have the ability to elect our leaders, be respectfull of others and vote for whomever you think deserves to win. Do this with respect for one another, it's not that hard. If you need help figuring out how to do this, try visiting a kindergarten classroom, they seem to have it figured out. Shame on us grown ups.
